Knitting Gauge Calculator

Welcome to the Indidi Gauge Calculator. Most knitting patterns are designed around a standard 4-inch (10 cm) square, but translating those numbers into your specific project requires total precision.

I’ve built this calculator to handle the math for you, converting your swatch measurements into precise stitches and rows per unit. To ensure your project starts on a solid foundation, I have integrated logic checks into the tool. It will automatically flag “unusual” numbers, helping you catch common measuring mistakes (like measuring per-inch instead of per-swatch) before you ever cast on.

Whether you are working in Imperial or Metric, use this tool to turn your tension into a “knitting superpower.”

Knitting Gauge Calculator

Input Swatch Details

Your Gauge is:

0.00 sts / inch
0.00 rows / inch

How to use the calculator

  1. Select your unit: Toggle between Centimeters or Inches.
  2. Enter your swatch data: Type the number of stitches and rows you counted across your 4-inch or 10 cm measurement.
  3. Check for Warnings: If a blue message appears, double-check your measuring technique!
  4. Knit with Confidence: Use the resulting sts / inch (or cm) to calculate your cast-on and project length.

Why the Calculator Matters

Once you have your sts / inch (or cm), you have the data you need to:

  • Confirm your size: Compare your results to the pattern requirements.
  • Adjust your needles: If your gauge is off, you'll know exactly whether to go up or down a needle size.
  • Calculate your cast-on: Multiply your stitches per inch by the desired width of your project for a custom fit.

Posts using this calculator

This calculator is the backbone of my design process. I use it to ensure every project has a predictable fit and reliable yarn usage. You can see the logic of this tool applied in detail here:
